How often do you think about updating your furniture upholstery?

Just like fashion, furniture can be refreshed with seasonal trends. Popular high-end furniture styles for 2022 praise Scandinavian geometric shapes and Greenguard Gold Certified furniture fabric.

In the 2022 furniture styles, we also see neutrals saturate every interior design magazine, continuing with the Scandi trend. Check out this guide in which we’ll share the ten fabric furniture style trends for 2022!

1. Greenguard Gold

While this isn’t a specific type of fabric, but rather a certification, it is becoming increasingly important to buyers. In the past, fabrics were processed heavily with toxic chemicals for a certain wash and texture. Then they were sprayed down further with toxic flame retardant.

All these toxic chemicals are referred to as VOCs (volatile organic compounds). They emit dangers like formaldehyde into your home’s air. Products with Greenguard Gold certification must pass strict industry standards for low or no VOC emissions.

2. Hemp

As sustainability becomes more important, we’re seeing a higher frequency in the use of sustainable materials, like hemp. Hemp requires no pesticides to grow and requires less water than cotton to harvest.

It has a beautiful natural pebble texture great for sofas. It’s durable and lasts for years to come, as long as you don’t stain it!

3. Cotton

Cotton isn’t going anywhere. You’ll see cotton canvas fabric in neutral shades of off-white, cream, and beige everywhere, especially for the warmer months and patio furniture.

4. Vegan Leather

Vegan leather is just an eco-term for faux leather since it is synthetically produced. Vegan leather is not necessarily better for the environment, as it requires many of the same chemicals used in natural leather processing.

However, we are seeing it be used a lot, especially when catering to a younger demographic. Some companies are finding innovative ways to make safer vegan leather, like from olives and grape skins.

5. Velvet

The 70s are back! Velvet is a popular pick for today’s ottomans and wingback chairs. It is super soft and looks great in neutral or bright colors like blue and green.

6. Linen

Linen is actually made from the flax plant. It’s a natural, sustainable material and is a naturally beautiful off-white color.

7. Leather

If you thought leather was out of the game due to vegan leather, hold that thought! Leather remains one of the bestselling furniture fabrics due to its versatility, comfort, and ultimate richness.

8. Upholstered Teak

As the pandemic has more people working from home, people have turned their backyards into outdoor entertaining spaces. More people are adding weather-resistant teak furniture outside and protecting it with patterned, colorful upholstered pillows.

9. Fur

Fur shag chairs are everywhere! Sitting in one is akin to someone embracing you in a warm bear hug. Real fur chairs are pricey but ultra-chic!

10. Bouclé

Boucle is is a special type of woven fabric where yarns are looped to create tiny piles. The result is something super luxe and inviting at the same time. It’s great for statement sofas!
