The Materials

As one craftsman described it: the goal it to “make a piece that will survive as long as it takes for another 100 year old tree to grow [like the one from which the piece was made]”.
Note how the wood planks and pieces are assembled — adjoining planks should have grains running in the opposite direction of each other; as well as the lack of marks from carving and routing. Metal fasteners, screw and glue may be used to join disparate parts, but will be hidden from obvious sight. Curved pieces (chair backs, sofa legs, etc.) should show no cracks or wrinkles.
The Finish
Every piece of heirloom quality furniture has received multiple sandings throughout the process of its construction. This will bring out the beauty of the natural grain and allow the stain to absorb evenly. Proper sanding techniques guarantee that the stain will sink deeply into the wood and retain its beauty for the next generation. High-quality protective surface finishes will be evenly and thoroughly applied to prevent water and other types of damage.

What is wicker?

One of the defining design moments each year is when the Pantone Color Institute announces its “Color of the Year”. For 2015 Pantone has chosen “Marsala” [image]. As Pantone says, “Much like the fortified wine that gives Marsala its name, this tasteful hue embodies the satisfying richness of a fulfilling meal while its grounding red-brown roots emanate a sophisticated, natural earthiness…. Dramatic and at the same time grounding, the rich and full-bodied red-brown Marsala brings color warmth into home interiors.”
Other top color trends this year — according to interior designers, home decor magazines, and the major paint companies — will be:
- Greek (or Mediterranean) blue
- Sour Apple green, especially when teamed with blue and white
- 1960s colors palette: olive-green and orange, for example
- Renaissance palette: rust, olive, dusty green, and deep purple
As for home furnishings trends for 2015, the overriding emphasis is on incorporating a fusion of styles into interiors. Designers advise mixing old and new to create comfortable, yet stylishly interesting living spaces. Combining a variety of materials — such as stone, different types of metals, and fabrics of varying textures — is a popular trend. Another hot trend will be varying wood types in a single room.
