Did you know the average sofa has a lifespan of between seven and fifteen years? If your current home seating is looking a little worse for wear, or you’re looking to redecorate, you’ll want to do some research first.

So take a seat and keep reading to learn about the different types of sofas and how to choose a sofa for your home!

Types of Sofas

There’s a sofa for every home, from a studio apartment to a private mansion. Here are some sofa types and examples of where they fit in best.

Sectional

Sectional sofas, sometimes lumped in with modular furniture, are an arrangement of multiple pieces. Sectional formations are typically composed of three to five stand-alone elements. The best sectional sofa advantages come from the customization options, making them ideal sofas for families.

Loveseat

A loveseat differs from a traditional sofa based on its size. A loveseat, by definition, is a two-seater sofa; its name evokes the romantic image of a couple sitting side-by-side.

Due to their compact proportions, these pieces work well alongside other lounge pieces in small areas like dorms, game rooms, nurseries, or a spacious bedroom.

Settee

‘Settee’ is the most interchangeable term with ‘sofa.’ A settee is simply a medium-sized seat with a back and arms on raised legs. It may have one long cushion and a flat upholstered back.

While they can fit two to three people, it’s usually used by a single person or as an accent piece in hallways, in an office, at the end of a bed, or in a walk-in closet.

Tuxedo

Tuxedo-style sofas have seen a rise in popularity, especially on social media sites, thanks to their versatility, sleek design, and timeless look. The back is the same height as the armrests and sports a boxy shape. It fits in well in bedrooms and apartment living rooms.

Lawson

The Lawson-style sofa is comfort conceptualized with loose, plush cushions and a pillowy back. It is all curves, making it a perfect place for an afternoon nap or a movie night in front of the TV.

It’s a pretty simple design, so it’s ready to be dressed up with throw pillows and blankets.

Futon

Futon sofas may evoke college dorms or adolescent bedrooms, but they have their place in any home.

The Western version of the futon is a thick mattress on a low platform with or without armrests. The frame can be angled in a ‘sofa’ shape or lie flat to transform into a sleeping space.

Camelback

Camelback-style sofas are identifiable by their arched or scalloped backs and curved armrests. They often have wood trim or decorative finish around the edge of the upholstery.

These pieces were a staple in common areas back in the 18th century and have stood the test of time, remaining a popular home furnishing.

Sofa Buying Tips

If this is your first time furnishing your space, the first you’ll need to do is take measurements. Keep in mind the size restrictions when you shop. If you’re buying online, read the product description and the reviews to get a better impression.
